The Southern Illinois men's tennis team split two matches over the weekend, defeating the University of the Cumberlands on Friday and falling to Eastern Kentucky University on Saturday.

The Salukis traveled to Kentucky on Friday to face the Patriots of Cumberlands. The teams first faced off on the doubles courts where SIU easily dispatched the Patriots. All three of the Salukis' doubles teams defeated their opponents by the score of 8-1.

With a 1-0 lead, the Salukis headed to the singles courts where their dominance continued. SIU swept the singles competition, picking up six wins and a 7-0 victory on the day.

"We were very business-like and quickly took care of the Cumberlands," said head coach Dann Nelson. "It was a good match for us to get used to the indoor courts at EKU in order to prepare for our match with EKU on Saturday. We played a different lineup in both singles and doubles and won easily in both. It was a definite confidence builder for Saturday's match with EKU."

Unfortunately for the Salukis, the confidence boost from the win over the Patriots did not help much on Saturday against Eastern Kentucky. The Salukis struggled early, dropping two of three doubles matches and falling behind 1-0.

The Salukis troubles continued on the singles courts as only Rodrigo Lama and Lucas Waked were able to pull out wins.

"Our guys who are normally very tough to beat did not come through today," said Nelson. "I don't remember the last time Sanchez and Villasenor lost in both singles and doubles. EKU came out ready to play today and we were just going thru the motions at times.

"It goes to show you that you can't just walk out on the court and expect to win. You have to be intense and fired up so that even if you are losing your match so that your teammates can feed off your energy. I am impressed with EKU. They are well coached and I believe they will make some noise this season in the OVC."

The Salukis will look to learn from their mistakes against EKU when they return to action on Friday, March 2 against Marquette in Milwaukee, Wis. at 4 p.m.
