CARBONDALE, Ill.-- The Southern Illinois University men's tennis team swept Saint Louis University 7-0, Saturday at Sports Blast. The Salukis now improve to 5-2 overall and remain undefeated on their home court.

"It is exciting to get out first sweep of the season," said SIU head coach Dann Nelson. "Our doubles played the best they have all season and everyone really contributed today."

The Salukis continued their momentum from Friday's match in doubles play. Brandon Florez and Martijn Admiraal jumped out to a big lead quickly to distance themselves from SLU. They finished the match with a break and a hold to record SIU's first win of the day.

Szymon Opieczonek and Jorge Cavero saw success in No. 3 doubles play putting away their opponents 8-2.

"Jorge (Cavero) and Szymon (Opieczonek) are really starting to gel as a team and were able to incorporate some new tactics they learned in practice this week," said Nelson.

Southern continued to dominate the Billikens in singles action, winning each match.

Florez topped former Saluki Bobby Kidera in straight sets 6-4, 6-2. Badr Cherradi continued to see success topping Joe Flanagan 6-0, 6-3 to win six of his last seven matches. Jorge Cavero also remained hot on the court recording a 6-2, 6-2 win to take five of his last six matches.

"Jorge Cavero and Badr Cherradi did really well today," said Nelson. "They both are playing with a lot of confidence right now."

Freshman Jonny Rigby tallied his fourth straight win, showing poise and confidence to win his match 6-0, 6-2.

"Jonny Rigby is really serving well and has made huge strides this semester to improve his game."

Rafael Cuadrillero closed out the day with barnburner. The junior picked up a 6-4 win in the first set but dropped the second set 2-6. With encouragement from his teammates and fans he was able to pick up the W with an 11-9 win in the tiebreaker.

"I am especially proud of Rafael (Cuadrillero)," Nelson said. "He was able to win his match today after struggling a bit in his last match, it felt good to see him win."

Southern Illinois will head north next weekend for matches at UIC and Chicago State on March 9 and 10th
