    Des Moines, Iowa -

The Southern Illinois University Carbondale men's tennis team came away with a consolation title in No. 3 singles, but struggled overall in the Missouri Valley Conference Individual Championships, the opening tournament of the 2001 spring season. The Salukis won only one other match in the eight additional divisions in the January 26-28 tournament at Drake University.

Peter Bong, a freshman from Australia, was the lone bright spot for the Salukis, wining the consolation bracket in No. 3 singles on Saturday, January 27.

"I was very impressed with Peter Bong. He played a great first college tournament. Even though he lost his first college match, he came back and won three straight matches to finish in fifth place and win the consolation bracket," head tennis coach Missy Jeffrey said. "He is a versatile player and he pulled off a big win against Gustav Petersen, a strong player. He learned a lot and is going to be a good player."

After losing his opening match, Bong won three straight matches to finish the tournament 3-1. Bong's wins included a victory over Wichita State's Gustav Petersen, a sophomore with wins over the No. 4 and No. 82 ranked NCAA players, as well as over the No. 36 and No. 191 ranked ATP Tour players.

Indiana State dominated the event winning eight of the ten titles, including all seven singles titles and a doubles match. Illinois State won the remaining two doubles matches in the tournament. The Saluki men return to the courts on March 2, against Valparaiso University.
