CARBONDALE, Ill.-- The Southern Illinois University men’s tennis team six-match win streak ended Sunday afternoon as Northern Illinois bested the Salukis 4-3.
“We did not get enough help from our other singles players to be able to take the win today,” said SIU head coach Dann Nelson.
SIU opened the day seeing success in doubles play as the duos of Brandon Florez/Martijn Admiraal and Jorge Cavero/Szymon Opieczonek defeated their opponents 8-6.
In singles action, Badr Cherradi led the Salukis in the No. 3 singles position winning his seventh consecutive match 6-1, 6-1.
Martijn Admiraal was the last win of the day for Southern Illinois topping Maksym Lagutin 6-2, 6-2 to record his ninth consecutive win and remain undefeated this season.
“Badr Cherradi and Martijn Admiraal continued to play really well today for us easily defeating their opponents,” Nelson said.
The remaining Salukis struggled to gain momentum in their singles dual’s allowing Northern Illinois the advantage.
“We will have to make sure we all show up and compete as a team if we want a positive result in our next match.”
Southern Illinois will travel to Edwardsville this Wednesday for a match with its sister school at 2:00 p.m.
