CARBONDALE, Ill.-- The Southern Illinois University men's tennis team topped the 2012 NJCAA National Champions Saturday afternoon at University Courts.

The Salukis put away the Trailblazers of Vincennes University, 6-1, to record their ninth win of the season.

"I am really proud of the team for coming together and winning convincingly today," said SIU head coach Dann Nelson.

SIU began the day with ease in doubles competition nabbing two points as Jorge Cavero and Szymon Opieczonek topped their opponents, 8-1, and Brandon Florez and Orhan Spahic put away their competition, 8-0.

One week after battling No. 19 Illinois, Vincennes challenged the Salukis in the top singles spots. Brandon Florez and Jorge Cavero wrestled back and forth in their matches in the No. 1 and No. 2 singles positions.

"We knew our top two players in singles would have tough matches today," said Nelson. "Our scouting report was dead on with that."

Brandon Florez came up short against VU's Erick Bermudez falling 6-4, 7-5 while Jorge Cavero was able to hold on in his roller coaster set taking the win 6-4, 5-7, 8-2.

Notably, Badr Cherradi recorded his ninth consecutive win of the season to hold an undefeated personal record this season.

The Salukis begin conference play next weekend when they travel to play Bradley on Saturday and Illinois State on Sunday.
