CHICHAGO, Ill. - Chicago was good to the Southern Illinois men's tennis team as they won two matches there this weekend. The Salukis defeated both Illinois-Chicago and Chicago State by a score of 6-1.

"I am definitely pleased with how we played," said tennis coach Dann Nelson. "Anytime you can play three quality teams in three consecutive days and come home with three wins, it's good."

The Salukis lost the doubles point in both matches, but that was it, as they went undefeated in singles action all weekend.

Sergio Sanchez made it 11 singles wins in a row as he took down Adriano Liccardo of UIC (6-2, 6-3) and Abram Mamahit of CSU (6-1, 6-2). Sanchez won both his doubles matches as well with partner Feilpe Villasenor.

"Sergio had another great weekend," said Nelson. "Nobody has an answer for Sergio."

Villasenor also had a great weekend winning all his matches. He pulled off the three set win against UIC and then easily defeated Prabowo Imanuel of CSU (6-0, 6-2).

Playing at number two Rodrigo Lama defeated Paul Glendenning of UIC (6-0, 6-2) and edged Jonathan Sutjaidi of CSU in a close three set competition (6-7, 7-5, 6-4).

"Rodrigo stepped up this trip and finally played like we all know he can play," said Nelson.

Andrei Bubnov, Tomas Gonzalez, Nick Bauer and Bojan Ilievski all had key contributions in the wins. Bubnov had a hard-fought three set win against UIC.

"Bubnov played really well in his matches," Nelson said.

Gonzalez won both his singles matches in two sets. The closest any of his opponents got was 6-2. Bauer had a great come from behind win in the number six spot against Toni Todoric of CSU (6-7, 6-4, 6-3)

The official enforced a three game penalty against the Salukis in all the doubles matches against Chicago State. Meaning Chicago State was given a 3-0 lead to begin the match. The official thought the match started at nine, while Nelson was told the start time was 9:30.

"We played that match under protest today," Nelson said.

With the wins the Salukis improved to 9-5 on the season. The team will host two home conference matches this week. Wichita State comes to Carbondale on Saturday, while Drake will be in town on Sunday.

"Our confidence is high going into the conference matches this weekend," Nelson said.
