DES MOINES, Iowa - The Southern Illinois men's tennis team (8-9, 1-1 MVC) fell to Drake (16-5, 1-0 MVC), 6-1, on Friday afternoon. The match for SIU has highlighted by Jonny Rigby and Michal Kianicka winning at No. 1 doubles, beating the No. 48 ranked doubles team nationally from Drake.
"Drake is a tough team and the gold standard right now in our conference," head coach Dann Nelson said. "We were able to hold our own at No. 1 doubles. Jorge played a very smart match and continues to play well."
Rigby and Kianicka beat Robin Goodman and Ben Lott, ranked No. 48 nationally in a hard-fought 8-7 win. Southern dropped the doubles point with losses at Nos. 2 and 3 doubles, thought Jorge Cavero and Szymon Opieczonek were close to giving Southern the point at No. 2 doubles.
In singles play, Southern was facing a daunting Drake attack that features five players ranked in the top-15 in the ITA Central region. Jorge Cavero provided the only Saluki win and point with a straight-sets 6-3, 6-2 win over Ben Lott, who is ranked No. 15 in the ITA Central Region.
The Salukis could not keep up at the other five courts, however, losing all five others in straight sets. Rigby and Kianicka both forced second-set tiebreakers but lost close 7-6 decisions.
UP NEXT: The Salukis return home next weekend to face Wichita State on Friday and Western Illinois on Saturday.
