BLOOMINGTON, Ill.-- The Southern Illinois University men's tennis team topped Illinois State Sunday, 5-2, to begin conference play undefeated.

"I am really proud of the way the guys stepped up today," said SIU head coach Dann Nelson. "We wanted the guys to trust and believe in each other today and that's what they did."

The Salukis (11-3, 2-0 MVC) kicked-off the day with dominate play in doubles competition, sweeping ISU (5-1, 0-1 MVC). Brandon Florez and Martijn Admiraal defeated their opponents 8-6 while Badr Cherradi and Jonny Rigby won 8-7. Jorge Cavero and Szymon Opieczonek completed the sweep with an 8-2 victory.

In singles competition, SIU was able to take four of the six sets to pull away with their second conference win.

Badr Cherradi was the first to take a singles win topping Jacob Wilson 6-2, 6-2. Freshman Jonny Rigby followed holding onto his match 6-2, 3-6, 6-4.

"There were many close matches that could have either way," Nelson said. "Our guys had a little more left in the tank and played very good in the third set."

Martijn Admiraal and Jorge Cavero capped off the day taking their matches to close out Illinois State.

The Salukis return home next weekend April 12-13 hosting Creighton on Friday and Drake on Saturday.
