CARBONDALE, Ill.-- The Southern Illinois University men's tennis team battled with the 28th ranked team in the nation Saturday but fell short dropping the contest 4-3.

The Salukis (12-4, 3-1 MVC) welcomed No. 28 Drake (20-2, 3-0 MVC) in their final home match of the season. SIU was poised for the upset but could not find the final wins they needed in singles play.

"I am very proud of the guys in the way they came out ready to compete today," said SIU head coach Dann Nelson. "We gave it everything we had and came up just short of defeating a nationally ranked team."

Southern Illinois shined in doubles play winning two of three matches to take the doubles point. Brandon Florez and Martijn Admiraal recorded their 10th consecutive win with their 9-7 victory. The duo found themselves down at match point but fought back to win the match.

Badr Cherradi and Jonny Rigby also won in number two doubles topping their opponents 8-3.

"Our doubles play was very impressive today," said Nelson. "With winning the doubles point we set the stage for a huge upset."

Two Salukis were successful in singles competition but it was not enough to knock-off the Bulldogs.

Jorge Cavero defeated Alen Salisbasic 4-6, 6-3, 10-7 while freshman Jonny Rigby took his match against Jean Erasmus 6-3, 6-7, 10-7.

"Jorge Cavero really played a smart match today," Nelson said. "Jonny Rigby won in both singles and doubles today and has really improved from the fall season and can beat any player."

Before the match seniors Badr Cherradi, Brandon Florez and Orhan Spahic were recognized for their contributions to Saluki tennis.

"I want thank all of the fans that came out to support us on our senior day. Brandon, Orhan and Badr mean so much to our program and it was nice to see the support from our fans."

Southern Illinois will travel Wichita State April 20 for their final match before MVC Team Championships.
