OMAHA, Neb. -- The Southern Illinois men's tennis team defeated Missouri Valley Conference foe Creighton 6-1 today at the Hanscom Indoor Tennis Center to improve to 1-1 in MVC play.

The match was moved indoors due to inclement weather, but the change didn't affect the Salukis (7-11, 1-1 MVC), who ceded only one match point at No. 6 singles and two total matches to the Bluejays (9-8, 0-4 MVC), who have dropped four out of their last five contests.

The Salukis began the match by stealing the doubles point, winning at Nos. 2 (Orhan Spahic and Syzmon Opieczonek, 9-8) and 3 (Badr Cherradi and Jordan Snyder, 8-6). The Salukis have taken the doubles point six times this season, and Southern is 5-1 when it does.

Southern dominated singles for the second straight match, winning at Nos. 1 through 5. Leading the Salukis at the top four spots yet again were the upperclassman quartet of senior Stanislas Rodier (No. 2) and juniors Cherradi (No. 1), Brandon Florez (No. 3), and Spahic (No. 4).

Rodier improved to a team-best 8-7 in singles with his 7-5, 7-6 victory over 2011 MVC All-Conference selection J.T. Christian. The senior Paris native is on a three-match win streak and is 5-4 in his last nine contests.

Also collecting a Saluki win in singles was sophomore Rafael Cuadrillero, who defeated CU's Ryan Norman, 6-3, 6-4, to improve to 5-7 this dual match season and 5-3 in his last eight decisions.

With the win, Southern improves to 8-1 versus Creighton under Dann Nelson since his first season in 2006. In that time span, the Bluejays have scored eleven total points out of a possible 56.

"We used the momentum from winning doubles into singles today," said head coach Dann Nelson. "It was a huge team effort, and we are looking forward to the challenge of playing Drake tomorrow."

The Salukis travel to Des Moines, Iowa, tomorrow to square off against No. 49 Drake, with first serve slated for 10 a.m.
