CARBONDALE, Ill. - The Southern Illinois men's tennis team (10-10, 2-2 MVC) avenged an earlier loss to Illinois State with a 4-3 win at the University Courts on Saturday afternoon, 4-3. After losing to the Redbirds (7-12, 1-3 MVC) 4-1 at the MTSU Shootout before conference play started, the Salukis rebounded to top Illinois State 4-3 to grab the No. 3 seed in the MVC Tournament.

The Salukis dominated at the top of the lineup in both singles and doubles. After dropping the doubles point in the first meeting between the schools, Southern started out the second match by getting the doubles point and an early 1-0 lead. Jonny Rigby and Michal Kianicka dominated at No. 1 doubles, cementing their terrific season by completing an undefeated MVC season.

"We talked all week about the doubles point being extremely important for this match," head coach Dann Nelson said. "Jonny and Mike are undefeated in conference play at No. 1 doubles. They really set the tone for doubles, winning 8-0. The game changer was No. 2 doubles getting the win."

In singles play, Jorge Cavero also completed an undefeated MVC slate. Cavero, who has now won 11 of his last 12 singles matches, plated at No. 1 singles and cruised to a 6-3, 6-1 win. Rigby and Kianicka also got straight-sets wins at Nos. 2 and 3 singles to secure the team win for SIU.

"Jonny, Jorge and Mike played very smart matches and there was no denying them today," Nelson said. "Szymon, Rafa, and Jeremy all lost the first set but showed a lot of heart to battle back in the second set."

Coming into the match, SIU and Illinois State were tied for the No. 3 spot in the MVC, meaning the winner could grab the No. 3 seed in the conference tournament. SIU grabbed the spot to secure a top-three MVC finish for the third-straight year.

The match served as senior day for Rafael Cuadrillero and graduating junior Jorge Cavero. Cavero was the 2011 Freshman of the Year and was named to the 2011 MVC All-Select team. He is a two-time ITA Scholar-Athlete selection and has won 55 matches in his SIU career. The Lima, Peru, native is majoring in business and has won 34 doubles matches in his career.

Cuadrillero is a three-time ITA Scholar-Athlete and a two-time Missouri Valley Conference Scholar-Athlete selection. The senior from Madrid, Spain, has won 24 singles matches and six doubles matches in his career. He is majoring in civil engineering.

"I am very proud of our seniors Jorge and Rafa," Nelson said. "They were able to end their career at hone with a huge team victory. Jorge finished undefeated in singles in conference."

The Salukis will head to Bloomington, Ill., for the MVC Championships on April 25-27. Southern will be matched up with Wichita State in its first-round matchup.

"We look forward to the conference tournament were we will face Wichita State," Nelson said. "We are playing very well right now, and we have nothing to lose. We can't wait."
