NORMAL, Ill. -- The Southern Illinois men's tennis team completed its regular season with a 7-0 loss at Illinois State on Saturday, finishing with a 10-7 overall record and a 2-3 mark in the Missouri Valley Conference.
The Salukis could not manage a victory in a single set in either singles or doubles against the powerful Redbirds (15-7, 4-1 MVC).
Freshman Jorge Cavero had his seven-match winning streak come to an end, losing to ISU's Timon Reichelt at No. 2 singles (3-6, 4-6), marking his first loss since March 16. Cavero ended the regular season with a 14-3 overall record.
Fellow freshman Adam Fabik dropped his singles match at No. 1 to the Redbirds' Alexander Pelaez, 3-6, 4-6.
Freshman Carlos Do Val's four-match winning streak was also snapped after a 2-6, 2-6, loss to ISU's Tuomas Manner at No. 4, concluding his singles regular season at 10-7.
Overall, the Salukis were 63-39 in the dual match season, yielding a .618 winning percentage. Saluki freshmen alone were 38-19.
In doubles, the Salukis failed to win more than four games against their opponents, losing 8-2 (Fabik/Brandon Florez), 8-0 (Cavero/Do Val), and 8-4 (Jordan Snyder/Orhan Spahic). Overall, SIU finished 25-20 in doubles for the dual-match season.
"We just could not get anything going our way," said head coach Dann Nelson. "Doubles were horrible -- but give ISU credit, they played well. We will have to play much better if we want to get out of the first round of the MVC Tournament."
The Salukis will play in the Missouri Valley Conference Championships, April 29-May 1, in St. Louis, Mo.
