Omaha, Neb.-For the first time since 1991, the Southern Illinois men's tennis team will have a chance to compete for a Missouri Valley Conference title as they advanced to the championship match as they defeated No. 3 seed Wichita State, 4-3.
It came down to the final match as Sebastian Rubiano pulled out a two set win over Matt Teivans, 6-2, 6-4 at No. 5 singles. "I am so proud of the team and we had guys step up today and win that lost the last time we played Wichita State," Head coach Dann Nelson said. "We are excited to get another chance to play Drake in the final."
The Salukis earned the doubles point with wins at No. 1 and No. 2 doubles and won singles points at No. 1, No. 2 and No. 6.
"When someone is struggling other players step up big and that's what Felipe and Anton did today and Sebastian sealed it for us when we were tied 3-3 and has been clutch for us all season," Nelson said.
The Salukis will meet No. 1 seeded Drake in the championship tomorrow with the match time at 11 a.m. The Salukis lost to the Bulldogs in a 4-2 decision in Carbondale on April 5.
