    CARBONDALE, Ill.--The Southern Illinois men's tennis team returned to Carbondale on Saturday to host the 2013 SIU Fall Classic.

    The Salukis welcomed South Dakota State and Eastern Illinois on Saturday for a three-team, unscored mixer. Play began outdoors at 9 a.m. but it was moved indoors due to rain.

    "We played really well in doubles today, I was pleased to see that," said SIU head coach Dann Nelson.

    Southern Illinois dueled with South Dakota State to open up the Classic. The Salukis came out strong, decisively sweeping the doubles competition.

    Jonny Ribgy teamed up with freshman Michael Kianicka. The duo topped Boglic and Lawley of SDSU, 8-6. Jorge Cavero and Szymon Opieczonek followed suit defeating their competitors, 8-6. Fliip Aleksic and Rafael Cuadrillero completed the doubles sweep with an 8-4 win.

    The Salukis took the first four singles matches from the Jack Rabbits. Jonny Rigby and Jorge Cavero put away their sets 6-2, 6-1 and 6-0 6-2, respectively, while Michal Kianicka and Szymon Opieczonek battled in tie-breaks.

    Kianicka dropped his opening set but rebounded taking the next two sets 6-2 and 10-3. Opieczonek also dropped his first set but was able to put away Curcija of SDSU, 6-2, 10-7.



    For the nightcap, Southern Illinois and Eastern Illinois moved back to the outdoor courts to play under the lights. Southern saw success again in doubles play taking all three matches.

    Eastern Illinois was able to take two singles wins as Jonny Rigby and Filip Aleksic dropped their matches.

    Michal Kianicka, Jorge Cavero, Szymon Opieczonek and Rafael Cuadrillero topped their Panther opponents to close out the day.

    "I am very proud of Szymon, Jorge and Michal who each were able to go undefeated in singles and doubles."

    The Salukis will travel to the ITA Regional Oct. 17-21 in Tula, Oklahoma.
