    TULSA, Ok.—The Southern Illinois University men’s tennis team wrapped up play at the ITA/USTA Central Regional Championship in Tulsa, Oklahoma.

    The Salukis have been competing in the 15-team tournament since Thursday, facing nationally ranked players from across the Midwest.

    The men's tournament started Oct. 17 with a pre-qualifying round and two rounds of qualifying. The main draw began on the 18th and will conclude on Monday.

    Southern Illinois found success on Thursday in the first two qualifying rounds. Jorge Cavero kicked-off his successful weekend with a 6-4, 6-7 (6) win over Arthur Romanet of Bradley to move on to the second round where he topped Santiago Munoz of Arkansas 6-4, 6-7.

    On Friday, Cavero competed in the third and final qualifying round of singles falling to Nathan Roper of Oklahoma State 6-4, 6-3.

    Sophomore Jonny Rigby competed in the main draw consolation singles bracket that began on Saturday. Rigby opened up the first round with a win over Parker Lawley of South Daktota State, 6-1, 6-4. On Sunday, Rigby fell to Ruben Weber of Minnesota in the second round 7-5, 6-3.

    Freshman Michal Kianicka also competed in the main draw consolation singles bracket advancing past round one with a 6-1, 6-2 win over Chris Haworth of Oklahoma State. Kianicka faced fellow Missouri Valley Conference player Alen Salisbasic of Drake in the second round. Salisbasic, who holds a no. 7 national ranking, topped Kianicka 6-1, 6-4.

    The Salukis continued to see success in doubles play at the tournament. Doubles play began on Friday. The duo of Jonny Rigby and Michal Kianicka topped their competitors of Western Illinois 8-3 to advance to the second round that was played that night. Rigby and Kianicka, again saw success against the doubles team from Iowa defeating the Hawkeyes 8-3 to move on to the third round on Saturday.



    Rigby and Kianicka found their fiercest competition on Saturday in the third round as they faced the no. 5 ranked doubles team from Oklahoma. Webb and Siegel of Oklahoma were able to stop SIU’s momentum, topping Rigby and Kianicka 8-1.

    Szymon Opieczonek and Jorge Cavero opened their doubles play with an 8-7 (8) win over their opponents from Arkansas. Opieczonek and Cavero moved on to the second round where they fell to the duo from Bradley, 8-6.

    Southern Illinois will wrap up its fall season Nov. 8-10 at the MVC Individual Tournament in Des Moines, Io
