Carbondale, Ill - The men's tennis team was picked to finish sixth this season by the 2003 Missouri Valley Conference coaches' poll. Head coach Michelle "Missy" Jeffrey is excited about the placement her Saluki squad received from opposing conference coaches, but feels that this team has more potential then the poll shows.
"Even though we've struggled the past couple years, this pick by the coaches shows their respect for our recent improvement," said Jeffrey. "This team has done really well at MVC championships and can beat many of the teams in this conference. I believe that we can do at least one spot better than sixth."
After finishing in ninth place the past two seasons, the Salukis plan to improve through their experience. Five out of the seven players on the men's tennis team have been together for more than one year. That consistency just might bring them some much desired success on the courts.
Indiana State was the top choice by MVC coaches to win the regular season crown, followed by Wichita State and Illinois State.
1. Indiana State (8) 64
2. Wichita State (1) 56
3. Illinois State 51
4. SW Missouri State 35
5. Drake 33
6. Southern Illinois 27
7. Bradley 21
8. Evansville 19
9. Creighton 14
