    MVC Release

ST. LOUIS - Southern Illinois sophomore Jonny Rigby was named the Missouri Valley Conference Men's Tennis Athlete of the Week, the conference announced Tuesday. Rigby earned the honor with Evansville's Natasha James on the women's side.

Jonny Rigby won a pair of doubles matches at No. 1 doubles with Michal Kianicka and added another singles win against UT-Arlington over the weekend at the MTSU Shootout. Rigby improved to an MVC-best 10-3 at No. 1 singles and, along with Kianicka, an MVC-best 8-4 at No. 1 doubles. The tandem has now won four of its last five matches and eight of its last 10 decisions--all on the top court. In singles, Rigby has won nine of his last 11 decisions and was leading in the third set on Sunday but the match went unfinished when the team match ended first.

The weekly honor is the second of the season for Rigby after he also earned the honor on Feb. 4. Rigby is the first non-Drake player to earn the award in seven weeks and the only non-Drake player to earn the honor twice this season.

Rigby, a sophomore from Lancashire, England, is the first SIU player to earn the weekly award since 2011, when Adam Fabik also earned the honor twice.

The Salukis begin conference play this week with road matches at Bradley and at Drake on Thursday and Friday, respectively.
