PEORIA, Ill. - Southern Illinois University's women's cross country team finished sixth out of 21 teams running the 6K at the 2004 NCAA Midwest Regional earlier today. The Saluki men, who also competed, took 12th in the 21-team, 10K event.

Both SIU squads missed a trip to the NCAA Nationals in Terre Haute, Ind., held Nov. 22, as the top two teams and four individuals from each of the nine regionals move on.

As a team, the Saluki women compiled 218 points to finish right behind conference rival Southwest Missouri State (214). Missouri (52) won the event, while Illinois (93), Oklahoma State (113) and Minnesota (128) took the top-four spots.

Brittani Christensen and Sarah Rinker finished 23rd and 24th, respectively, to lead SIU. Christensen ran a time of 21:23.86, while Rinker followed with a 21:27.37 mark. A total of 185 runners competed.

Meanwhile, SIU's men's squad collected 328 points as the 12th-place team. Minnesota (48), Oklahoma State (79) and Iowa (87) made up the top-three.

Joe Byrne and Diarmuid Grant were the Dawgs' top-two finishers. Byrne placed 40th with a time of 31:37.98 and Grant was 43rd with a 31:41.09.

Today's NCAA Regional marked the end of SIU's 2004 season.
