DES MOINES, Iowa-- Whitney Pegram scored 23 points, including 13 in the last seven minutes of the game to lead Drake (13-13, 10-7) to a 65-53 come-from-behind win over Southern Illinois (3-23, 2-15) earlier tonight at the Knapp Center.
The win marked the Bulldogs' 18th straight over the Salukis dating back to 1997.
Meanwhile, for SIU, the loss marked its eighth straight and 13th in its last 14 games.
Dana Pinkston knocked down a pair of three-pointers to help lift SIU to a 12-2 lead in the first 4:59 of the game. The Salukis would then extend their lead to 30-17 on a free throw by Julie Madura (3:06) before taking a 34-26 lead at the break.
SIU's eight-point lead would gradually disappear in the second half, where the Dawgs shot an ice cold 27 percent (7-of-26) from the field.
Despite its cold shooting, SIU was able to maintain its lead all the way to the 6:47 mark, where Pegram suddenly took the game into her own hands.
Not only did Pegram bury a go-ahead jumper which gave Drake its first lead (50-49; 6:47), but she followed up the key basket by scoring 11 of the Bulldogs' last 15 points of the game. Not to mention, she converted a three-point play with seven seconds left to seal the 65-53 win.
Pegram shot 10-of-19 from the field and 3-of-4 from the free throw line en route to her team-leading 23 points. She also pulled down seven rebounds and had two blocks. Jill Martin followed with a double-double 15 points and 10 boards.
SIU was led by Dana Pinkston's 17 points. Katie Berwanger followed with 16. Pinkston shot 7-of-18 from the field, including 3-of-9 from three-point range, while Berwanger hit 7-of-12 field goals and 2-of-2 free throws. She also grabbed nine rebounds.
SIU concludes its 2003-04 season at Creighton on Saturday at 3:05 p.m.
