    CARBONDALE, Ill. - Join Saluki Athletics and the Women's Intersport Network in celebrating `National Girls and Women in Sports Day' as the Salukis take on Northern Iowa on Thursday, Feb. 6, at the SIU Arena. Tip-off is 6:05 p.m. Admission will be free to students of all ages, and the first 200 fans will receive an official Girls and Women in Sports bracelet.

    A special video presentation is scheduled for halftime as well as a number of on-court recognitions highlighting the accomplishments of female athletes and those who support them.

    Post-game autographs will take place on the court immediately following the game. In addition to Saluki women's basketball players, team members from volleyball, tennis, swimming and diving, women's golf and track and field will be part of this special meet-and-greet.

    U.S. Congress chartered National Women in Sports Day in 1986 to acknowledge and recognize the achievements of female athletes and also encourage participation of girls and women in sports Since then, NGWSD continues to focus on three main goals:

  • · To acknowledge and recognize the past and present accomplishments of female athletes
  • · To identify the positive influence of sport participation
  • · To increase awareness of the consistent struggle for access and equality for women in the sports atmosphere
