    Southern Illinois University Carbondale junior point guard Holly Teague has been named Missouri Valley Conference Newcomer of the Year for the recently completed 2000-2001 women's basketball season.

    Teague beat out Sharon Blade of Illinois State, Kinga Kiss of Southwest Missouri State and Kristy Thomann of Indiana State for the honor. The only other time a Saluki woman has won this award was in 1995 when Cari Hassell was awarded both Newcomer and Freshman of the Year awards as well as being named to the All-Newcomer team.

    This past season Teague was tops on the Salukis with 117 assists while averaging 9.4 points and 3.2 rebounds a game in playing a team-high 34.4 minutes a game. In the MVC Teague was ranked fourth overall in assists.

    The Poplar Bluff, Missouri native came to SIU from Three Rivers Community College where she was first-team All-Region and All-Conference while averaging 20 points and five assists a game. At Poplar Bluff High School, Teague was a four-time All-District player as well as being second-team All-State and All-Conference. She is the daughter of Brad and Deana Teague and has one sister, Heather.

    In addition, center Kristine Abramowski was named honorable mention on the MVC Scholar-Athlete Women?s Basketball Team. The senior from Freeport, Illinois posted a 3.01 GPA in Elementary Education.
