The Southern Illinois Basketball team is in its 51st year of existence... Head Coach Missy Tiber is in her first season with the team and holds a 167-70 (.705) career record entering her ninth season as a head coach... last season the Salukis finished with a 9-19 record and were 5-13 in MVC play, eighth in the Missouri Valley Conference... Southern returns five letterwinners and one starter from the 2008-09 squad and welcomes five transfers and four freshmen.
SCOUTING SAINT LOUIS
The Billikens posted a 12-18 overall record in 2008-09, and finished ninth (6-8) in the Atlantic 10 Conference. SLU returns two starters and seven letterwinners from last season's team.
SERIES WITH SLU
SIU leads the all-time series with SLU, 12-5. The Salukis have taken four of the last five games with the Billikens, including a 85-77 victory to open last season at home.
SALUKIS SPLIT EXHIBITION
SIU took down Division II Quincy in their first exhibition game, 67-59 before falling to Division III Washington University, 84-74, the 2009 NCAA runner-up. Christine Presswood led the Salukis with a 13-point, 11-rebound double-double against Quincy before suffering injury in practice, sitting out the Wash. U. game. In her absence, Stephany Neptune stepped up to record a 25-point, 15-rebound double-double against the Bears. Eboni Crayton posted 15 points against Quincy and 16 against Wash. U. Crayton and Neptune averaged 15.5 points during exhibition, Neptune posting 12.0 boards per contest.
SALUKIS IN SEASON OPENERS
The Southern Illinois women's basketball team is 21-27 overall in season openers. The team is also 8-14 when they open the season on the road and 5-8 when opening at home since 1974.
TIBER TAKES THE REIGNS
Missy Tiber, the Salukis new head coach, is no stranger to success. In eight years at the Division II level at two different schools (Belmont Abbey and Tusculum), Tiber recorded a 167-70 (.705) record, three conference championships and three NCAA tournament appearances.
WAGS MAKES SMOOTH TRANSITION
Senior guard/forward Katie Wagner spent the last four years as an infielder on the Southern Illinois softball team before deciding to make the transition back to the basketball court after a successful high school career at Mt. Vernon. In exhibition play, she averaged 9.0 points and 4.0 rebounds per game.
SALUKIS WELCOME NINE
The Southern Illinois women's basketball team welcome nine newcomers for the 2009-10 season including two fresh faces to the senior class including former Saluki softball player Katie Wagner and Division II All-American Stephany Neptune. SIU also adds two junior college transfers and four freshmen. Nicole Howe will make her first appearance as a Saluki this season after sitting out the 2008-09 season with a knee injury.
SIU is 40-56 all-time during the month of November.
