SIU VS. LOYOLA
The Salukis are 2-1 all-time against Loyola. The Ramblers topped the Salukis 66-44 in Carbondale last season in SIU’s home opener. Loyola dropped its season opener to Lafayette 62-51 before rebounding to even its record at 1-1 with a 56-50 win over LaSalle. Saturday’s game will be the Ramblers’ home opener. Sophomore forward Simone Law leads Loyola with an average of 11.0 points and 9.0 rebounds per game while senior guard Patrice King is close behind at 10.0 points and 9.0 rebounds per game.
LAST TIME THEY MET
SIU led Loyola 22-10 midway through the first half, but faded as the game wore on in an eventual 66-44 loss to the Ramblers in the Salukis’ 2011-12 home opener. Teri Oliver led the Saluki effort with 18 points and three steals while Cartaesha Macklin added nine points and nine rebounds. Monica Albano netted 23 points to lead Loyola while Simone Law added 16. Albano went 7-for-9 from the field and 7-for-7 from the free throw line in the most efficient shooting performance any player had against the Salukis last season.
SHOOTING WOES DOOM SALUKIS IN SEASON-OPENING LOSS
SIU launched 70 shots but only connected on 20 in a 59-46 loss to Central Arkansas Tuesday in the Salukis’ season opener. Southern played tough defense, but couldn’t contain Sugar Bears forward Megan Herbert, who finished with 32 points and 24 rebounds. UCA out-rebounded the Salukis 55-39 and shot 36 free throws to SIU’s nine as Southern was whistled for 27 fouls on the evening. Alexus Patterson led SIU with 11 points and six rebounds while Jordyn Courier added nine points and Dyana Pierre pulled down a team-high nine rebounds.
MACKLIN NEARS 500
Saluki sophomore Cartaesha Macklin sits one point shy of 500 career points entering Saturday’s game. In what will be her 32nd career game, she will likely become the fastest player in SIU history to reach the 500-point plateau.
SALUKIS HANDLE EXHIBITION FOES
Southern had a solid preseason with convincing wins over two exhibition opponents. The Salukis defeated Central Methodist 82-57 November 2 before dispatching Missouri-St. Louis 72-48 November 6. Freshman forward Azia Washington averaged 14 points and 13 rebounds in the two exhibitions while freshman guard Rishonda Napier averaged 14 points and 7.5 assists. Sophomores Cartaesha Macklin (13.5 ppg, 4.5 apg) and Alexus Patterson (11.5 ppg, 7.7 rpg) also had solid showings in the exhibitions.
SALUKIS PICKED 8TH IN MVC PRESEASON POLL
Southern was picked to finish a spot ahead of its 2011-12 finish with a No. 8 ranking in the Missouri Valley Conference’s annual preseason poll. The Salukis garnered 123 points in the annual vote of league coaches, media and sports information directors. Defending MVC Tournament champion Creighton was selected as the preseason Valley favorite led by preseason MVC Player of the Year Carli Tritz.
