JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- Saluki women's golf improved on its team score in its final round of the North Florida Intercollegiate on Tuesday, shooting a third-round 318 to finish tied for ninth overall.

Western Carolina (919) kept up its momentum from the first day and cruised to an 11-stroke victory over second-place Daytona State (930). SIU improved by five strokes over its second-round score (323) and seven over its first-round mark (325). Although they improved their overall score, the Salukis fell from eighth place into a tie with James Madison.

"I'm disappointed with our finish," said SIU head coach Alexis Mihelich. "Only a couple players could get it going in the final round. Jacksonville Golf Country Club was a challenging, tight golf course and our games weren't ready for the difficult setup. By the next event later in the week we will be more prepared and acclimated."

Southern only received two rounds in the 70s in the final round, both from Cassie Rushing (78) and Ashleigh Rushing (75). Ashleigh's third-round 75 was the lowest round for SIU in the two-day tournament.

"I'm glad Ashleigh bounced back in the final round and Cassie grinded it out to both be our low scores on the day," Mihelich said.

Individual competitor and sophomore Mattie Lindner finished tied for 24th overall with the second-best 54-hole score for SIU at 240. Also competing were Brooke Cusumano (tied for 33rd, 243), Kris Grimes (tied for 42nd, 246) and Xianmei Jin (tied for 58th, 255).

Southern will stay in Florida for the Eagle Landing Invitational this weekend, held from March 14-16 in Orange Park, Fla.
