ORANGE PARK, Fla. -- Saluki women's golf got off to a strong start at the Eagle Landing Invitational hosted by James Madison University, posting a first-round team score of 296 and sitting in fifth place after Day One on Friday.

Southern's first round score of 296 is the third-best this season and is tied for the eighth-best 18-hole score in school history. The Salukis are in prime position to make a run for their third tournament title of 2013-14, sitting only five strokes off of tournament leader Delaware (291) with two rounds to go.

SIU got superb individual performances from each Saluki golfer on Friday, as no one shot worse than a 78 all day. Senior Cassie Rushing led the way once again with a first-round 73 -- which ties for 12th place after 18 holes. Sophomore Mattie Lindner and freshman Brooke Cusumano both tie for 23rd as each posted career bests with first-round 74s on Friday. Behind them were senior Ashleigh Rushing (tied for 34th, 75) and junior Kris Grimes (tied for 60th, 78), bolstering SIU's team score by staying in the 70s.

Freshman Xianmei Jin is competing as an individual, but she also bounced back with a first-round 74 to put her in a tie for 23rd with Lindner and Cusumano.

Round Two will begin at 7 a.m. CST on Saturday.
