COOKEVILLE, Tenn. - The Southern Illinois women's golf team finished the Bobby Nichols Intercollegiate in fifth place. The Salukis were led by senior Shaina Rennegarbe, who finished second overall and earned a spot on the All-Tournament team.
"Shaina played a great tournament, especially in the second round," head coach Alexis Mihelich said. "She has turned a corner and is on her way to a great finish to an already fantastic career. Hopefully, we'll get all our pieces headed in the same direction and we can finish this season strong as a team."
Rennegarbe shot a 78 in the first round and followed that up with a tournament-best second-round score of 72. Her 72 tied a career best and was her best round this season by three strokes. Her two-round total of 150 was the second best of her career, and her second-place finish was the best in her career.
The Addieville, Ill., native tied with two others for second place, one stroke behind tournament champion Delaney Howson of Murray State. Rennegarbe has finished in the top 15 in each of SIUs three spring tournaments. The Bobby Nichols Intercollegiate marked her seventh career top-10 finish and second of the season. Rennegarbe finished in the top-10 individuals in par-3, par-4 and par-5 scoring. She recorded 21 pars in 36 holes.
Cassie Rushing tied for 12th at the tournament, her seventh top-15 finish in eight tournaments this season, and Amy Lee tied for 23rd, her fifth top-25 finish in the last six tournaments. Ashleigh Rushing tied for 41st and Mattie Lindner tied for 54th to round out the scoring Salukis. Alexis Gatton finished in 53rd competing as an individual.
Southern topped the other two Missouri Valley Conference schools in the tournament convincingly, beating Evansville by 29 strokes and Northern Iowa by 45 strokes. The Salukis posted a top-five finish for the seventh consecutive tournament.
UP NEXT: The Salukis host the Saluki Invitational on March 24-25 at Hickory Ridge. The Salukis swept the team and individual crowns at last year's Saluki Invitational, with Cassie Rushing returning to defend her individual win at last year's Saluki Invitational.
