CARBONDALE, Ill. - The Southern Illinois women's golf team sits in first place after the first round at the Saluki Invitational, and Cassie Rushingis tied for first individually. The Salukis hold an eight-shot lead over Iowa with 18 holes to play. The second round will be held tomorrow, March 26, starting at 9 a.m. Southern is going for its fourth win of the year.
"I am really pleased with Cassie's performance," SIU head coach Alexis Mihelichsaid. "She is finally playing to her level of talent. We had solid rounds from our number 2 through 4 players, which was key for our 301. When you count no scores in the 80s, it really helps to make this team competitive."
Cassie Rushing shot an even-par 72 and is tied with two others players for first individually. Rushing shot 16 pars on the day, leading the field and an SIU squad that led all teams with 53 pars. Alisha Matthews shot the next-lowest score in the tournament with a 74 and sits in fourth place. Matthews led the field with four birdies on the day. Margaret Gilleyshot a 77 and is tied with four other players for eighth overall. The Salukis are the only team with three players in the top 10 individually.
Shaina Rennegarbe is tied for 13th place after shooting an opening round score of 78, and Ryann Gilley (87, t-73rd) rounded out the Saluki five. Ashleigh Rushing (80, t-26th), Jennifer Bernhardt (84, t-58th) and Amber Phillips(86, t-71st) all competed as individuals.
The final 18 holes start tomorrow with a shotgun start at 9 a.m. The 17-team, 96-player tournament is being played at the 6.075-yard Hickory Ridge Golf Course in Carbondale, Ill.
