PEKIN, Ill. -- Saluki women's golf sits in third place after the first 18 holes of the Bradley Invitational on Saturday, where Southern received four scores in the 70s for the sixth straight round.
Southern sits in prime position to make a run for its fourth tournament win of 2013-14, down only three strokes after receiving four superb low scores from two seniors and two freshmen. If SIU were able to pull that off, it would be the ninth under SIU head coach Alexis Mihelich in three seasons at Southern, and the most in a single season since Mihelich won four in her first season in 2011-12.
Senior Ashleigh Rushing continued her recent hot streak with an opening round 76 to lead the Salukis and put her in a tie for fifth place overall. Senior Cassie Rushing was right behind her with a 77 to put her in a tie for 10th. Combined, the Saluki twins have 19 rounds below 80 in their last 26 rounds played between them in the spring season.
Freshman Brooke Cusumano also kept her streak alive by shooting a first-round 77 to tie Cassie Rushing for 10th overall, her sixth-straight round in the 70s. Fellow freshman Xianmei Jin also shot a 79 to put her in a tie for 20th overall, her fifth round below 80 in her last six as well.
"We are right there in the mix, and we aren't even playing our best golf," Mihelich said. "We are consistent, but we just need some breakout rounds tomorrow."
The final round of the Bradley Invitational will begin at 10 a.m. on Sunday.
