BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The Southern Illinois women's golf team is in 11th place after the first two rounds of the Indiana Invitational. The Salukis rebounded from a slow start to post the top second-round score among Missouri Valley Conference schools and fifth-best second-round score overall to gain momentum heading into the final round.
"We battled cold and windy conditions in the first round, but we bounced back," head coach Alexis Mihelich said. "We fired the low second round for all the MVC schools participating. I'm proud of our players for having the mental toughness to bounce back like that."
Mattie Lindner is leading the Salukis after the first two rounds, firing a 78 and 79 in the rounds. Lindner is tied for 25th overall in the 85-player field. Amy Lee (159) is two strokes behind Lindner. Shaina Rennegarbe and Cassie Rushing are both tied for 38th after shooting two-round totals of 160. Ashleigh Rushing (162) is tied for 44th and rounds out the Saluki five.
Southern trails MVC foes Illinois State and Bradley by seven and three team strokes, respectively, and leads Evansville and Drake by 26 and 30 strokes, respectively. SIU's second-round total of 311 was three strokes better than any conference foe's second-round score.
