CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. -- Saluki women's golf finished tied with Murray State at the conclusion of a dual-match between the two schools at Dalhousie Golf Club on Sunday.
Southern shot a 319 amid blustery conditions in the 18-hole dual-match against the Racers, who also shot a 319 to tie SIU for the overall lead. Damage control in the winds became crucial for each school as there were only two rounds shot in the 70s on the day, one by each school.
"The wind was blowing a solid 30-40 miles per hour the entire day with scattered showers throughout," said SIU head coach Alexis Mihelich. "The conditions were tough, but we battled it out."
Even in the high winds the Salukis garnered a solid performance from freshman Xianmei Jin, who led all competitors with a 76 that included three birdies. Sunday's round was Jin's third-straight round in the 70s and her seventh such round in her last eight attempts.
"Xianmei played fantastically in the elements," Mihelich said. "Her score came through for us and boosted us to a tie. It's her first collegiate win and hopefully there's more to come in her Saluki career."
Junior Kris Grimes finished tied for third overall with an 80, her second third-place finish in her last three outings. Senior Cassie Rushing shot her first round 80 or higher in over one month with her round of 81 (tied for sixth). Cassie's twin sister Ashleigh Rushing shot an 82 that was good for a tie for eighth place, and freshman Brooke Cusumano finished 10th overall at 83.
Next up for the Salukis are the Missouri Valley Conference Championships next week on April 20-22, hosted by Bradley in Springfield, Ill.
