SUNRISE BEACH, Mo. - The Southern Illinois women's golf team is in second place after the first round of the MVC Championships. Mattie Lindner and Cassie Rushing are both among the top-10 individuals to lead the Salukis, who are just one stroke behind tournament leader Wichita State.
"We are right there in the hunt where we want to be," head coach Alexis Mihelich said. "Last year, we were 21 shots back after the first round and lost by six strokes. We start the second round only one shot back."
The tough course and weather conditions contributed to high scores for the entire field. Only 13 golfers in the 50-player field shot better than 82 in the first round, two of which were SIU's Mattie Lindner and Cassie Rushing.
"It was a really difficult course and played windy and long," Mihelich said. "We battled every shot of the way and never gave up. I am very pleased with the resilience of the team, and we will stay humble the remainder of the tournament."
While most of the field struggled in the first round, Lindner came within one stroke of matching her career-best round with a 78 on Sunday. Lindner is tied for third in the tournament, two strokes behind the clubhouse leader. Lindner has posted scores in the 70s in three of her last four rounds.
Cassie Rushing was only one stroke behind Lindner and is tied for eighth in the tournament. Shaina Rennegarbe (83) is tied for 15th. Amy Lee (86) and Ashleigh Rushing (87) round out the Saluki lineup and are tied for 27th and 33rd, respectively.
The field looks to be deep with contenders, with six teams within eight strokes of the lead. Wichita State is leading the tournament, followed by SIU, Bradley and Indiana State. The pre-championship favorites, Missouri State and Illinois State, are in fifth and sixth after one round.
