SPRINGFIELD, Ill. -- Saluki women's golf shot a 308 at the second round of the Missouri Valley Conference Championships at Panther Creek Country Club on Monday, which places SIU in a tie for fifth place overall heading into the final round on Tuesday.
Consistent rain resulted in higher team scores across the board on Day Two, but only nine strokes separate the Salukis from current-leader Bradley -- who received another strong round from tournament leader Danielle Lemek (139) despite the conditions. In each of the last two MVC tournaments, no more than 10 strokes have separated the top-five teams. Southern is currently tied with Missouri State for fifth place at 608 strokes, the only school to shoot lower on Monday than in the first round on Sunday.
Southern's low score on Monday came from senior Ashleigh Rushing (152), who shot her second 76 of the tournament to put her in a tie for 18th overall. Rushing also led SIU with two birdies on the front-nine on Monday to push her total to five through two rounds. After scoring a double-bogey on the ninth hole, Rushing hit par on eight of her last nine holes to be one-over par on the back-nine.
Ashleigh's twin sister, Cassie Rushing (tied for ninth, 150), is still SIU's lowest overall score through 36 holes after shooting a 77 on Monday. Rushing hit her only birdie on Monday at the first hole but ran into trouble on the ninth hole, where she carded a three-over par. In her previous three MVC tournaments, Cassie Rushing has not finished worse than fifth overall as an individual.
The final three participants in Southern's starting roster are each tied for 26th overall at a 36-hole score of 154: Kris Grimes (79 on Monday), Xianmei Jin (78) and Brooke Cusumano (77). For Cusumano, today's round was her sixth 77 in her last seven tries.
The final round of the MVC Championships will begin at 9 a.m. on Tuesday at Panther Creek Country Club. Live results are available at GolfStat.
