SUNRISE BEACH, Mo. - The Southern Illinois women's golf team is in second place after the first two rounds of the three-round Missouri Valley Conference Championships, one shot out of first place. Cassie Rushing shot even-par 72 today and is tied for the tournament lead heading into tomorrow's final round.
"We need to go out there and win it tomorrow," head coach Alexis Mihelich said. "I'm confident in the team, and hopefully, we will peak in the final round."
Four of Southern's five golfers improved their score from the first round, led by Cassie Rushing's seven-shot improvement. Rushing posted the second-best score of the tournament with an even-par 72 in the second round and is tied for the tournament lead with a two-round total of 151.
After starting the round with a birdie and double bogey, Rushing shot 13 pars in her final 16 holes and birdied her final hole to end the round at even par. She is tied for the tournament lead in pars with 23 through two rounds. Rushing is tied for the tournament lead with Illinois State's Katie Jean. At last year's MVC Championships, Jean won the individual title and Rushing placed second, just two strokes behind Jean.
"Cassie just didn't miss today," Mihelich said. "She was crushing her drives and firing at the pins. It will make for an exciting shootout tomorrow."
Shaina Rennegarbe posted a 79 in the second round and moved up three places into a tied for 12th in the tournament. Mattie Lindner (165) is tied for 18th, and Amy Lee (168) is in 25th after two rounds. Ashleigh Rushing (171) rounds out the squad and is tied for 31st in the 50-player tournament.
"Ashleigh (Rushing) and Amy (Lee) bounced back and grinded the day out until the very end," Mihelich said. "Shaina (Rennegarbe) has played solid two days in a row."
The field is balanced and deep. Four of the top five teams shot identical team scores in the second round (317). The top four teams are separated by just three strokes.
