TERRE HAUTE, Ind. - The Southern Illinois women's golf team improved two spots to fifth place in the team standings and three individuals shot better rounds on day two of the MVC Women's Golf Championships Monday.
SIU now sits just ten strokes back from the leader Northern Iowa who shot a 311 on day two. The Dawgs were the only team to post a better score in round two.
The Panthers hold a combined team score of 610 and the Salukis sit in fifth with a 620, just one stroke behind fourth-place Illinois State.
Cassie Rushing scored a one-over-par 73 to put her in a tie for second overall and a two-round score of 148. She is tied with Illinois State's Katie Jean headed into tomorrow's round of 18 holes.
The Salukis shaved off six strokes on their team score to finish the round of 18 holes with a 307.
"We are only ten shots back but as a team we haven't played great," SIU head coach Alexis Mihelich said. "We had some good individual performances and we are due for some good shots in round three."
Alisha Matthews made the biggest improvement for Southern in round two as she carded a 74, eight strokes better than her 82 in the opening round. She currently sits in a tie for 15th overall with a 156.
Ashleigh Rushing recorded an 81 for a combined two-round total of 157 while Shaina Rennegarbe also improved with a 79 to tie for 23rd with a 159.
Margaret Gilley added an 89 to put her score after two rounds at 173 to tie for 42nd.
"We will hopefully make up some ground in the last round for a strong finish," Mihelich said.
The final round will begin with 9:30 a.m. CT tee times Tuesday at the par 72, 6,272 yard Country Club of Terre Haute.
