ST. MICHAEL'S, Md. - The Southern Illinois women's golf team opened their season at the Towson Golf Classic today in St. Michael's, Md. The Salukis are in second place behind Yale after firing a 313 (198-197) in the first round.

Shaina Rennegarbe shot a 77 (38-39) in her college debut tying for sixth place with Alisha Matthews who also shot a 77 (39-38). Jenna Dombroski made an impressive start to her college career as well, firing a 78 (38-40). Sophomore Meg Gilley finished the day with an 81 (41-40), followed by Alex Anderson with an 82 (42-40).

"We started off very solid and this is not an easy golf course," said head coach Diane Daugherty. "I'm very pleased with 313 being our starting point."

Seven strokes separate the Salukis from Longwood and Fairleigh Dickinson, who trail closely behind at third and fourth place, respectively. Towson sits in fifth place with Dartmouth ten strokes behind in the No. 6 spot. Long Island University finished in seventh place with Fairfield one stroke behind in eighth place Mount St. Mary's and St. Francis (Pa.) round out the standings at No. 9 and No. 10.

With tough competition and tight scoring, Daugherty is pleased with team's performance after day one and hopes it continues tomorrow.

"For them to be this consistent and hit 313 off the bat makes me very happy," Daugherty says. "I look for even better things tomorrow."
