LEDBETTER, Ky. - The Southern Illinois women's golf team is in sixth place after one day at the Drake Creek Invitational. Ashleigh Rushing, Cassie Rushing, and Shaina Rennegarbe are all in the top 25. The final round of the tournament takes place tomorrow.

"I thought we showed a lot of resiliency, shooting that well in the second round," head coach Alexis Mihelich said. "We put it together, and we had four golfers shoot good scores during the second round. I'm proud of our team for coming back and doing that."

After shooting a 317 in the first round, SIU improved 21 strokes in the second round to shoot 296. Southern didn't shoot its first sub-300 round last year until the final round of the MVC Championships, but the Salukis accomplished the feat in just the fifth round of the 2012-13 season. Ashleigh Rushing shot a career-best 71 in the second round.

SIU's 296 in the second round was the third-lowest round any team on the day. Belmont jumped out to the tournament lead with a 292 in the first round, and Central Arkansas leads the tournament by one stroke after firing a 293 in the second round.

Ashleigh Rushing's 71 in the second round was the lowest score of the tournament so far. Central Arkansas' Carly Dear and Arkansas State's Jennifer Loiacano also shot 71's on Monday.

"I'm so proud of Ashleigh," Mihelich said. "She was our sixth golfer last year, competing as an individual. She put in a lot of work, and now she's one of our top players. It's great to see her put up par and sub-par scores like she has in each of the tournaments this year."

Cassie Rushing led the squad and is in 10th place individually after shooting 149 through the first two rounds. Ashleigh Rushing is four strokes behind Cassie and tied for 21st overall. Shaina Rennegarbe is one stroke behind Ashleigh Rushing and is tied for 23rd overall.

Newcomers Mattie Lindner (161, t-37th) and Amy Lee (162, t-40th) round out the Saluki five in the 11-team, 58 player field. Lindner's second-round 77 was a Saluki best. Alexis Gatton competed as an individual and tied with Lee for 40th overall.

Missouri Valley Conference foes Northern Iowa and Drake are also in the field. Southern leads Drake by 18 strokes and Northern Iowa by 19 strokes heading into the final day.
