LEDBETTER, Ky. - The Southern Illinois women's golf team finished in fifth place at the Drake Creek Invitational on Tuesday. Ashleigh Rushing led the team and tied for 10th individually.

SIU's 296 in the second round is the second-lowest second-round score in school history and tied for the sixth-lowest team round in school history. Southern battled windy conditions on Tuesday and scored 314 as a team, the third lowest team score in the third round.

"I'm pleased with today's scores given the harder, super-windy scoring conditions," head coach Alexis Mihelich said. "Ashleigh (Rushing) had a fantastic final two rounds. We beat conference rivals and moved ahead of Murray State, the host school, so there were many positives for us to take from the tournament."

Cassie Rushing (229) finished two strokes behind Ashleigh Rushing and tied for 13th overall. Shaina Rennegarbe (233) tied for 21st overall. Newcomer Mattie Lindner posted a career best in the second round (77) and tied for 34th overall. Amy Lee (247) rounded out the Saluki five. Alexis Gatton (251) competed as an individual and finished tied for 45th in the field.

Southern led the field in Par 5 scoring, finishing the three-round tournament at 14-over par. Cassie Rushing (+1), Mattie Lindner (+1) and Ashleigh Rushing (+2) all finished the tournament in the top eight in Par 5 scoring. Ashleigh Rushing posted her career best single-round score in the second round with a 71.

Southern got a glimpse of Missouri Valley Conference foes Drake and Northern Iowa, who were also in the field. The Salukis bested Drake by 31 strokes and Northern Iowa by 36 strokes.

Julia Roth of Central Arkansas won the tournament after a seven-hole playoff with Anna Carling of Arkansas State. The duo played the 18th hole seven times, with Roth finally winning with a par.

Central Arkansas also took the team title by five strokes over Arkansas State. Central Arkansas posted the tournament's best second- and third-round scores to fight back from a 14-stroke first-round deficit.

The Salukis are back in action on Sept. 24-25 for the SIUE Intercollegiate. SIU won the tournament last year, sweeping the team and individual crown. Alisha Matthews won the individual tournament title.
