SPRINGFIELD, Mo. -- Saluki women's golf concluded the Payne Stewart Memorial hosted by Missouri State on Tuesday with a third-place finish, the second consecutive top-three team finish for the Salukis.

After only completing one round on the first day, Southern and the other 16 teams in competition had two rounds to finish on the final day. At the end of day one, SIU was four strokes behind first-place Oral Roberts after shooting a first-round 300. The Salukis followed that up with a 302 in the second round and a 308 in the final round for a 54-hole score of 910.

Senior Ashleigh Rushing shot a second-round 71, which ties her career best single-round score set in the second-round at the Drake Creek Invitational in 2012. Rushing finished fifth overall with a career-low score of 222 that included a 36-hole score of 143 in the first two rounds -- which, ties as the fifth-best 36-hole score in SIU history.

Junior Kris Grimes (227) finished not much further behind in 11th place after shooting a 74 and 79 on the final day. Senior Cassie Rushing (229) finished 15th overall after shooting a 75 and 79 on Day Two -- her 65th and 66th career rounds below 80, which now only puts her three behind SIU's all-time leader Kelly Gerlach (69).

Freshmen Xianmei Jin (tied for 35th, 236) and Brooke Cusumano (tied for 41st, 237) each bounced back with strong third round scores in the 70s to help balance out Southern's team score.

Sophomore Mattie Lindner was the third-best individual competitor in the memorial tournament. Lindner shot a two-day total of 240, which tied her for 51st overall.

"I'm really happy with third place," said head coach Alexis Mihelich. "We played consistent for three rounds. My freshmen stepped it up in the third round. Ashleigh's ball striking was the best I've seen in three years. She hit a lot of fairways and greens and made a lot of birdies in the first two rounds."

Southern will conclude its fall season next Monday and Tuesday, Oct. 21-22, at the Blue Raider Intercollegiate in Murfreesboro, Tenn. Last year, Cassie Rushing took the Blue Raider individual title.
