MOBILE, Ala. -- Saluki women's golf is set to begin its spring season at the South Alabama Invitational on Monday and Tuesday.
The Salukis are coming off an impressive fall season that saw two team tournament wins (UMKC Kangaroo and MTSU Blue Raider) highlighted by a handful of SIU record-book performances.
SIU's success came from both the experienced and the inexperienced in the fall season, as Southern had three student-athletes play in each round in the fall: senior Cassie Rushing and freshmen Xianmei Jin and Brooke Cusumano. Rushing led SIU with two top-five finishes and three top-10 finishes, but four out of the five primary golfers on SIU's fall roster posted at least one top-five and top-10 finish themselves. Rushing tied the SIU all-time record for rounds under-80 her last time out with her 69th-such round in her career.
Southern's last tournament in the fall, the Blue Raider Invitational, was its most impressive. SIU held a three-stroke lead after Day One where no Saluki shot an individual round worse than a 78. Southern had to fight through miserable conditions on Day Two, where it played just good enough to stave off a charging Middle Tennessee State for its second tournament win in three tries in the fall. The victory was the seventh in three seasons under head coach Alexis Mihelich.
Day One tee time at the South Alabama Invitational is set for 7:15 a.m. CST.
