ST. LOUIS - Cassie Rushing was named to the Missouri Valley Conference Scholar-Athlete First Team on Thursday, and Shaina Rennegarbe earned a spot on the honorable mention team, the conference announced Thursday. Both Rushing and Rennegarbe were All-Conference honorees at the MVC Championship, as well.

Rushing earned a spot on the six-player Scholar-Athlete First Team for the first time in her career. Rushing holds a 3.7 GPA in sports administration. Rushing is a three-time All-Conference golfer and has finished in the top five at the MVC Championships in all three years at SIU. She won the Blue Raider Invitational and finished with the third-best season stroke average in the conference.

She is tied for fourth in school history with 56 career rounds in the 70s. On the season, Rushing had three top-five finishes and five top-10 finishes. She led the team with four par-or-better rounds and led the team in six of its 12 tournaments.

Rennegarbe was on of four golfers in the conference to earn a spot on the honorable mention Scholar-Athlete team. She has a 3.4 GPA in biological sciences. Rennegarbe also tied for fifth at the MVC Championship and earned All-Conference recognition. She posted two top-five finishes and five top-10 finishes. She was second on the team and 12th in the conference in season scoring average (79.3).

She led the team at two tournaments and earned MVC Golfer of the Week honors after tying for second place at the Bobby Nichols intercollegiate. She posted 16 rounds in the 70s on the season.

Southern Illinois has placed at least one player on the Scholar-Athlete team every season since 1993. This year marked the first time since 2007 that multiple players have been selected to the team.

To be eligible for the award, student-athletes must have a minimum of a 3.2 cumulative GPA, competed at the institution for more than one year and competed in at least 50 percent of the institution's competitions. Players are selected by a vote of MVC sports information directors.
