    MVC Release

ST. LOUIS -- Senior Cassie Rushing has been named a first-team Missouri Valley Conference Scholar-Athlete, the Valley announced Friday.

Rushing, a sports administration major with a 3.76 GPA, finished her Saluki career as one of SIU's finest golfers in program history. The Marion, Ill., native finished finished tied for fourth at the MVC Championships on April 22 -- her fourth-consecutive All-MVC honor. Rushing became one of only two female golfers in SIU history to earn all-conference all four years (Kelly Gerlach, 2004-08), and one of only eight golfers in the history of the MVC to do so. Rushing's name is plastered all over the Saluki record books, including atop Southern's all-time stroke average list at 77.1 and SIU's rounds below 80 at 85 such rounds. Rushing is one of only two honorees to earn the distinction twice, as this most recent honor is her second-consecutive Scholar-Athlete award.

The criteria for the MVC scholar-athlete team parallels the CoSIDA (College Sports Information Directors of America) standards for academic Capital One Academic All-America program. Nominees must have at least a 3.20 cumulative grade point average (4.0 scale), while the student-athletes must have reached sophomore athletic and academic standing at their institutions and must have participated in at least 50 percent of her team's rounds or played at the MVC Championship.
