    EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. - The Southern Illinois women's golf team is set to defend its title at the SIUE Doubletree Intercollegiate on Monday and Tuesday. The Salukis won both the team and individual titles at the tournament in 2011. Alisha Matthews won the individual crown.

    The tournament takes place at Sunset Hills Country Club in Edwardsville, Ill., and is hosted by SIU-Edwardsville. The course is a Par 72 and runs 6,025-yards long. There are 10 teams in the field. The teams will play one round Monday and the final round Tuesday in the 36-hole tournament.

    The Salukis are coming off a fifth-place finish at the MSU Drake Creek Invitational. Ashleigh Rushing led the team and posted a career-best round of 71 in the second round. Newcomer Mattie Lindner also posted a career-best round of 77 in the second round.

    Southern will face conference foes Creighton and Evansville in the tournament. Southern beat Evansville by 46 strokes in the season-opening Redbird Invitational. So far this season, SIU has finished ahead of MVC foes Drake, Evansville and Northern Iowa. SIU has not competed against Creighton this season.
