MURFREESBORO, Tenn. -- Saluki women's golf will look to close out its fall season on a high note at the Blue Raider Invitational hosted by Middle Tennessee State on Monday and Tuesday.
Senior Cassie Rushing is the reigning Blue Raider Invitational champion after a dominant 54-hole score of 217 and two par rounds pushed her to the individual victory in 2012. Rushing is currently leading the Salukis in stroke average (76.5), and if she shoots under 80 in each round this tournament she will tie Kelly Gerlach for SIU's all-time lead in total rounds under 80 at 69.
Last week at the MSU Payne Stewart Invitational, however, it was Cassie's twin sister, Ashleigh, that made waves. Ashleigh Rushing led the Saluki contingent that finished third overall with a 54-hole score of 222 (+6), which included a second-round score of 71. In her first two rounds Rushing shot a 72 and a 71 for a 36-hole score of 143, which tied as the fifth-best 36-hole score in SIU history.
Junior Kris Grimes will also look to finish the fall season on her current hot streak. In her last two tournaments, Grimes is shooting an average of 75, which included a career-low 73 in the first round of the UMKC Fall Invitational. Grimes has finished within the top-15 individually in two of her three tournament appearances in 2013.
Freshmen Brooke Cusumano and Xianmei Jin have played their part in Southern's team finishes thus far in 2013. Each has had two rounds below 80 in each of the last two tournaments, including a second-round 72 by Jin at the UMKC Fall Invitational, where she finished tied for 11th overall.
