Christy Connoyer enters her fifth season as a member of the Saluki coaching staff, and second season as an associate head coach.
Connoyer works primarily with the Salukis in hitting and defense, and under her guidance SIU has repeatedly been atop the MVC in many statistical categories.
In 2009, the Saluki saw great success at the plate under the direction of Connoyer. She helped the Salukis post a .264 team batting average, ranking second in the MVC for the second consecutive year. With the help of Connoyer, junior Alicia Garza recorded a .375 batting average, moving her into the top 10 at SIU for single season batting average.
In 2008, Connoyer coached the Salukis to a .270 team batting average, which ranked second in the MVC. SIU also ranked in the top three in 11 offensive categories.
Connoyer also helped senior Lauren Haas become the program's third MVC Player of the Year during 2008. Haas recorded one of the top all-around offensive seasons all-time with a .388 batting average, 39 RBI, seven home runs, and 13 doubles.
In her first season at SIU, the Salukis led the Missouri Valley Conference with a .283 team batting average. Southern Illinois kept its team average right around .300 throughout most of the season, getting it as high as .331 at one point.
Six Salukis finished the season with averages better than .300 and five Salukis (Katie Louis, Lauren Haas, Amanda Clifton, Krystal Stein, Tiffanie Dismore) finished the season ranked in the top 20 in the Valley in batting.
SIU was also second in the MVC in slugging percentage and ranked 15th nationally in triples per game. In her second year she helped guide the Salukis to another strong offensive and defensive season. SIU ranked in the top three in 11 offensive categories, and had the best overall fielding percentage (.976), which was the fifth-best in the country.
Connoyer took the assistant coach position at SIU after working the 2005 season as the head coach at the University of Tulsa.
The Golden Hurricane finished the season with a 31-30 overall record, going 11-7 in Western Athletic Conference play. Tulsa's 11-7 record was good enough for third in the final conference standings. Highlights from Tulsa's 2005 season included beating the University of Oklahoma twice while the Sooners were ranked in the top 10 in the nation.
Connoyer was also the first coach in the team's history to have a winning record in their first season as head coach.
Prior to coaching at Tulsa, Connoyer was an assistant at Purdue for eight seasons, helping the Boilermakers to 266 victories during that time and seven winning seasons.
During her tenure at Purdue, she worked primarily with hitting and defense, as well as coaching first base. Connoyer also served as the team's liaison with the academic counselors, monitoring student-athlete progress and planning various community service activities for the squad.
Before making the move to Purdue, Connoyer was the head varsity volleyball coach and assistant varsity basketball and softball coach at Loyola College Preparatory in Shreveport, La. She led a brand-new volleyball program to a pair of state tournament appearances. She also helped the Flyers win the 1996 Class 2A State Softball Championship.
Connoyer's experience extends beyond her coaching days as she played infield at the University of Notre Dame.
A four-year starter (1990-94), She played shortstop and second base, where she led the team in hitting as a freshman and in RBI as a junior. She was co-captain as a senior of the first Fighting Irish team to earn a NCAA Regional bid in 1994.
She earned the team's Most Valuable Player award her junior season. A standout player, Connoyer was named to the Midwestern Collegiate Conference first-team all-conference squad all four years.
She still ranks among the leaders in the UND record books for both assists in a single season and career, as well as games played in a single season.
Connoyer graduated with a bachelor's degree in government and international studies in 1994. She then obtained her master of arts in teaching in 1996 through the University of Portland, Notre Dame and the Alliance for Catholic Education (A.C.E.), a two-year teaching service project.
She was named to Notre Dame's Dean's List, as a member of A.C.E. won an Americorps National Service Grant. In addition, Connoyer was a recipient of Notre Dame's Award of the Year in 1996 for service and leadership in education.
Connoyer, a native of Bethalto, Ill., resides in Carbondale, Ill.
