SAN MARCOS, Texas— The Southern Illinois softball team swept opening day at the Century Link Classic on Saturday topping Stephen F. Austin and Texas A&M Corpus Christi.
SIU’s offense recorded 18 runs in 13 innings to put away the Ladyjacks and Islanders.

SIU (1-0) exploded for four runs on four hits in the first inning to give the Salukis an early lead.
“I am really pleased with how our offense came out,” said SIU head coach Kerri Blaylock. “It really set the tone for the game.”
Jayna Spivey recorded her 22nd career double in her first at-bat of the season to score Kalyn Harker who reached base on a hit-by-pitch. Orsburn followed Spivey with a single. Freshman Shaye Harre kept things rolling for SIU, doubling in her first at-bat as a Saluki to score Spivey and Orsburn. Sophomore Meredith Wilson rounded out the inning, singling to drive Harre home.
SFA (0-2) put two runs on the board in the second inning but the Salukis answered scoring one run. The Ladyjacks recorded their final run of the game in the fourth inning.
Southern had another offensive surge in the fourth inning scoring two runs with the help of a Michelle Glenn double and three walks.
Katie Bertelsen recorded the win pitching 5 innings, giving up three runs on seven hits. Senior Taylor Orsburn came in to close for the Salukis giving up no runs or hits and recording one strikeout to help SIU seal its first win of the season.
“I felt we had great defensive plays and Taylor Orsburn was able to close it which was phenomenal,” said Blaylock.
Freshman Shaye Harre had a successful Saluki debut going two-for-two, scoring one run and working two walks.

Texas A&M-Corpus Christi (0-2) opened up the final game of the night with a first-inning homerun. SIU (2-0) was unable to answer the run in the first but got on the board in the second inning recording three runs on two hits.
The Islanders responded, knocking in a two-run run homerun to finish the inning with a 4-3 lead.
Sophomore Taylor Harris recorded her first career homerun in the third inning bringing in three runs to give SIU a 7-4 advantage.
SIU brought in two more runs in the seventh inning to take a comfortable 11-6 lead.
The Islanders attempted a late comeback with a solo homerun in the first at-bat in the bottom of the seventh. Taylor Orsburn came into relieve Wunderlich helping the Salukis put away the next three batters.
Wunderlich took the win with three runs on six hits and three strikeouts.
“We hung in there and played two teams who can swing the bat really well,” Blaylock said. “I was happy to come away with two wins.”
The Salukis close out the Century Link Classic tomorrow with a doubleheader. SIU will face Ball State at 9 a.m. and host Texas State at 1 p.m.
