    CARBONDALE,Ill.-- The Southern Illinois University softball team will make its 2013 home debut this weekend as they host the Coach B Classic Sunday and Monday at Charlotte West Stadium. The schedule for the weekend has been modified due to unfavorable weather conditions on Saturday.

    Originally scheduled as a four-team round robin tournament with eight games slated for Saturday and Sunday, the Coach B Classic will now consist of four total games on Sunday and Monday. Also, Saint Louis will replace Western Illinois as a participant

    WHAT’S ON DECK Southern Illinois will make its 2013 home debut this weekend as the Salukis host Butler, Northern Illinois and Saint Louis for the Coach B Classic on Saturday and Sunday at Charlotte West Stadium.

    ABOUT THE COACH B CLASSIC This is the 27th time the Salukis have hosted the Coach B Classic named in honor of longtime former head coach Kay Brechtelsbauer. Brechtelsbauer coached the Salukis from the team’s origination in 1968 until 1999, amassing a 633-438-2 record during that time period.

    CHARLOTTE WEST STADIUM Southern Illinois will kick-off its 2013 home campaign Sunday at Charlotte West Stadium. Charlotte West Stadium is in its tenth year of existence as the home of Saluki Softball.  Since its opening on March 1, 2003, the Salukis have sported an  .757 winning percentage in their home facility. The stadium is named for Dr. Charlotte West, who retired as SIU’s associate athletics director in 1998, and served the University for 42 years as a faculty member, coach and administrator.

    RECAPPING LAST WEEK The Salukis concluded their 15-game road trip last weekend at the NFCA Leadoff Classic in Clearwater, Fla. SIU went 3-2 during the five game slate including upsetting No. 14 South Florida and 2012 NCAA Super Regional Team, Hofstra. 

    BLAYLOCK NEARS 500 WINS Kerri Blaylock returns to the helm of Saluki Softball in 2013 nearing her 500th career win. Blaylock enters her 14th season as the team’s head coach and her 23rd overall year with the program boasting a career record of 495-232.

    ALL-TOURNAMENT SELECTIONS Last weekend Morgan Barchan and Jayna Spivey were both named to the All-Tournament Team for the NFCA Leadoff Classic. Barchan hit .647 over five games (11- for -17) and scored eight runs while Spivey hit .438 (7-for-16) with eight RBI and two runs scored.

    SCOUTING BUTLER Butler enters the weekend with a record of 2-7. The Bulldogs picked up their first two wins last weekend against Morgan State and Tennessee State at the Tennessee State Invitational. BU returned 12 letterwinners from last year’s team that went 25-32. Bulter boasts multiple offensive threats including Meaghan Sullivan and Krosley Ogden who each are hitting over .350 for BU. The team was tabbed to finish seventh in the A-10 Preseason Coaches Poll. The Salukis lead their all time series with Butler 2-1. 

    SCOUTING NORTHERN ILLINOIS The Huskies evened out their record last weekend picking up two wins to now stand at 5-5 overall. Northern Illinois opened its season at the Baylor Getterman Classic in Waco, Texas finishing 3-2. This past weekend NIU went 2-3 with wins over North Florida and FAU at the FAU Tournament in Boca Raton, Fla. Two seniors returned for the Huskies. The majority of the roster is otherwise made up of under classmen including seven sophomores and five freshmen. Nicole Gremillion and Jennifer Barnett lead the Huskie offense posting batting averages of .364 and .367, respectively. Jessica Strum is the go-to pitcher for NIU. Strum boasts a record of 3-2 with a 1.08 ERA  and 18 strike outs in 39 innings pitched. SIU trails its all-time series with Northern Illinois 16-19. 

    NEXT TIME OUT Southern Illinois will return to Carbondale again next weekend as they host the Saluki Invitational March 9-10. The Invitational will include Wisconsin, Eastern Kentucky, UIC and Belmont University.
