    MVC Release

ST. LOUIS - Southern Illinois senior Jayna Spivey was named the MVC softball Player of the Week, the conference announced Monday. Spivey hit .692 in four games last week and hit a walk-off two-run double to beat Illinois State on Sunday.

Spivey hit 9-for-13 (.692) with three doubles, a home run and six RBIs last week. She posted a 1.154 slugging percentage and hit the game-winning two-run double in the bottom of the seventh inning to beat Illinois State. Spivey had all five RBIs in SIU's 5-4 win on Sunday, and her six RBIs for the week increased her school-record total to 141, good for eighth in MVC history and just five away from jumping into the top-five in MVC history. Spanning all three games of the series with Illinois State, Spivey recorded a hit in seven-consecutive at-bats. She totaled 15 bases and scored two runs, as well, and raised her season batting average to .370 on the season.

Spivey's 8-for-10 tear in the three-game series against Illinois State on Sunday continued her dominant play in MVC games. In SIU's 11 MVC games--all of which have come against teams picked to finish in the top half of the conference--Spivey has hit .556 with five doubles, a triple, two home runs and 16 RBIs. She has a .917 slugging percentage and .628 on-base percentage in MVC-only play, in addition to scoring seven runs.

Spivey already has 13 doubles in 2014, just two away from the school record for a single season. She has led an SIU offense that ranks 21st nationally of 288 schools in doubles per game, and Spivey ranks No. 17 individually in that category.

She is SIU's first MVC Player of the Week since teammate Allie VadeBoncouer earned the honor on April 23, 2012. The honor is the first of her carer for the three-time All-MVC selection.

Southern Illinois is back in action with midweek games on Tuesday and Wednesday against SEMO and Eastern Illinois. The Salukis will battle the Redhawks on Tuesday at 5 p.m. and the Panthers at 4 p.m. on Wednesday. Both games will be at Charlotte West Stadium.
