Softball salvages series finale win over Bradley
The SIU softball team (39-14, 16-10 MVC) rallied for an 11-5 victory Sunday over Bradley and will be the No. 4 seed in next week's MVC Championships held at Charlotte West Stadium.

CARBONDALE, Ill. -- The Southern Illinois softball team hosts Bradley for a three-game series Saturday and Sunday in what will be Senior Weekend for SIU's three seniors.

SIU leads the all-time series between the two programs 51-24, but the Braves took two of three from the Salukis last season in Peoria, Ill. Bradley enters the weekend at 22-23 overall and 7-11 in the MVC. The Braves are looking to stay out of ninth place in the league while the Salukis are looking to move into the top half of the league standings. The Braves offense is led by Bailiegh Basham's team-best .381 batting average to go along with 40 hits, 19 RBI and 25 runs scored. Brianne Joseph leads BU with 47 hits for a .331 batting average with a team-high 27 runs scored. Alyson Clemente (.321 avg, 43 hits, 24 runs) leads BU with 21 RBI while Alex Chandler (.290 avg, 36 hits, 18 RBI, 21 runs) has also been a solid offensive contributor. Madeline Lynch-Crumrine leads the Braves pitching staff with a 2.95 ERA and a 14-11 record. She has struck out 115 batters over 185.0 innings. Mackenzie Camp (8-11) is second on the team with a 4.75 ERA. She has struck out 97 over 101.2 innings.

The Braves took the season series 2-1 last season in Peoria. Bradley swept a doubleheader with 6-4 and 4-0 wins before the Salukis bounced back to take the finale 11-5.

SIU gave up a season-high in runs in a 14-7 loss to Southeast Missouri State Thursday evening on the road. Southern rallied from a 6-0 deficit after two innings to take a 7-6 lead in the bottom of the fifth before the home team responded with six runs in the fifth and two in the sixth to run away with a comfortable seven-run win.

Saturday's doubleheader will mark senior day for SIU's three seniors Morgan Barchan, Michelle Bradley and Brittney Lang. There will be an on-field recognition for the trio upon completion of the second game.

Junior Taylor Orsburn has reached base in 17 consecutive games for the Salukis through Thursday and also carries an eight-game hit streak into the weekend. The Alto Pass, Ill., native has recorded at least one hit in 14 out of SIU's last 15 games. Orsburn ranks third on the team with 43 hits.

Junior Jayna Spivey's team-leading 42 RBI not only ranks second in the MVC for the season, but also ranks seventh in SIU history for a single season. The Rosiclare, Ill., native also ranks second on the team with 45 hits and 35 runs scored.

Spivey is also working her way up the SIU record book for home runs. Her 11 home runs this season ranks second in the MVC and seventh in school history for a single season. She is up to 29 home runs for her career, which ranks fourth in SIU history.

Senior outfielder Morgan Barchan's 40 runs scored ranks fourth in the MVC and put her eighth in SIU history for runs scored in a season. The Arcadia, Calif., native has scored 114 runs over her career, which put her seventh in SIU history.

Barchan enters the weekend ranked second in the MVC with 57 hits, trailing league-leader Elizabeth Kay of Illinois State by one. Barchan sits just two hits shy of entering SIU's top 10 list for hits in a season.

Michelle Bradley's first-inning grand slam Tuesday against Evansville marked SIU's sixth of the season, which set a new program record for grand slams in a season. SIU's previous record of five grand slams came in 2010. Meredith Wilson has two of SIU's grand slams this season while Bradley, Jayna Spivey, Taylor Orsburn and Allie VadeBoncouer have the others.

Two players had career-best hit streaks come to an end last week. Sophomore Kalyn Harker had an eight-game hit streak come to a close in the first game of Wednesday's doubleheader against Evansville while junior Jayna Spivey had a 10-game hit streak end in the first game of Saturday's twinbill at Creighton. Senior Morgan Barchan had SIU's longest hit streak of the season with a 15-game streak that ended March 29 at Illinois State.

SIU's game April 10 at UT Martin marked SIU head coach Kerri Blaylock's 750th game as a head coach, all of which were at SIU. Blaylock picked up her 500th career coaching win on March 21 with SIU's doubleheader sweep of Saint Louis. In her 14th season, the Saluki skipper sits at 509-250 overall. She is the second SIU coach and the eighth MVC coach to reach the 500-win milestone. Her career .671 winning percentage is the highest among the MVC's 500-win coaches.

SIU is up to 34 homers for the season, which is tied for third in the MVC. SIU's 20 home runs in MVC games leads the league. Six Saluki players (Michelle Bradley, Morgan Barchan, Kalyn Harker, Taylor Orsburn, Jayna Spivey and Meredith Wilson) have either equaled or bettered their home run totals from last season.

Southern leads MVC in drawing free bases with a combined 239 free bases via walks and hit-by-pitches. The Salukis rank second behind Illinois State for the MVC's lead in bases on balls with 189, and the Salukis' 50 free bases on hit by pitches is the league leader by 13.

Junior Jayna Spivey came up with the walkoff winner in back-to-back games for the Salukis in the last two games of a three-game sweep of Missouri State. Spivey hit a walkoff grand slam with two outs in the bottom of the seventh to give SIU a 7-5 comeback win in Game 2. She followed with a walkoff RBI single with two outs in the ninth inning of a 5-4 win in the series finale. The Rosiclare, Ill., native also had a walkoff winner in SIU's 8-7 win over UC Davis on Feb. 22 at the NFCA Leadoff Classic. She has three of SIU's five walkoff hits this season.

Junior catcher Allie VadeBoncouer has drawn 20 free bases on hit-by-pitches this season. She ranks fifth in the nation in HBPs through the NCAA's most recent stats report. VadeBoncouer led the nation last season with 28 hit-by-pitches. She has been hit by 52 total pitches in her career.
