CARBONDALE, Ill.— The Southern Illinois softball closes out its home season Wednesday as the Salukis host Illinois for their final non-conference game of the 2013 regular season.
SIU VS. ILLINOIS
SIU trails its all-time series with the Illini 3-7, and Illinois has won the last five matchups. Southern’s last win over Illinois came in the first game of a 2008 doubleheader in Champaign, Ill. The Illini come into the matchup at 19-25 overall, having won eight in a row. Prior to the eight-game win streak, Illinois lost its previous nine in a row. Alex Booker leads the Illinois offense with a .367 batting average with team-bests of 47 hits and 30 runs scored. Jess Perkins (.286 avg, 32 hits, 20 runs) leads the Illini with 30 RBI while Remeny Perez (.295 avg, 29 hits) is second on the team with 19 RBI and is tied with Perkins for the team lead with 11 extra-base hits. Pepper Gay (10-15) leads the Illini with 32 appearances and 107 strikeouts and her 4.24 ERA ranks second on the team. Shelese Arnold (9-10) has Illinois’ top ERA at 2.75 with 66 strikeouts in 24 appearances.
LAST TIME THEY MET
SIU rallied from a 3-1 deficit in the seventh inning, but fell just short in a 3-2 loss to the Illini last season in Champaign. Southern surrendered just three hits in the game, but gave up an unearned run in the loss.
LAST TIME OUT
SIU picked up its second MVC sweep of the season with three one-run wins over Bradley Saturday and Sunday at Charlotte West Stadium. The Salukis had to hold off seventh-inning rallies by the Braves for 4-3 and 6-5 wins in the first two games before coming from behind in the seventh inning for a 3-2 win in the finale.
ORSBURN ON BASE
Junior Taylor Orsburn got a hit in all five of SIU’s games last week, extending her hit streak to 11 games and her on-base streak to 20 games. Both of those totals are career bests and they both ranks second on the team for the season behind senior Morgan Barchan, who had a 15-game hit streak and a 24-game on-base streak earlier this season. Orsburn has recorded a hit in 17 out of SIU’s last 18 games.
LANG RACKING UP STRIKEOUTS
Senior pitcher Brittney Lang had a career week last week with 28 strikeouts in four appearances for an average of seven per game. Prior to April 20, Lang’s career high in strikeouts was seven. She has eclipsed that mark three times in the past two weeks. She set a new career high with 13 strikeouts April 20 against Creighton before racking up eight last Tuesday against Evansville and nine Sunday against Bradley.
SPIVEY BRINGS RUNS HOME
Junior Jayna Spivey’s team-leading 43 RBI not only ranks third in the MVC for the season, but also ranks seventh in SIU history for a single season. The Rosiclare, Ill., native also ranks second on the team with 48 hits and 36 runs scored.
SPIVEY HITS HOME RUNS
Spivey is also working her way up the SIU record book for home runs. Her 11 home runs this season ranks second in the MVC and seventh in school history for a single season. She is up to 29 home runs for her career, which ranks fourth in SIU history.
BARCHAN CROSSES HOME
Senior outfielder Morgan Barchan’s 42 runs scored ranks fourth in the MVC and put her sixth in SIU history for runs scored in a season. The Arcadia, Calif., native has scored 116 runs over her career, which put her seventh in SIU history.
BARCHAN TOPS HIT LIST
Barchan enters the week as the MVC’s leader with 60 hits on the season. That total puts Barchan 10th in SIU history for hits in a single season. She sits 13 hits shy of Jen Feldmeier’s record of 73 from 1997.
ISN’T IT GRAND?
Michelle Bradley’s first-inning grand slam last Tuesday against Evansville marked SIU’s sixth of the season, which set a new program record for grand slams in a season. SIU’s previous record of five grand slams came in 2010. Meredith Wilson has two of SIU’s grand slams this season while Bradley, Jayna Spivey, Taylor Orsburn and Allie VadeBoncouer have the others.
SWINGING FOR THE FENCES
SIU is up to 36 homers for the season, which is tied for third in the MVC. SIU’s 22 home runs in MVC games leads the league. Six Saluki players (Michelle Bradley, Morgan Barchan, Kalyn Harker, Taylor Orsburn, Jayna Spivey and Meredith Wilson) have either equaled or bettered their home run totals from last season.
BASES FOR FREE
Southern leads MVC in drawing free bases with a combined 250 free bases via walks and hit-by-pitches. The Salukis rank second behind Illinois State for the MVC’s lead in bases on balls with 194, and the Salukis’ 56 free bases on hit by pitches is the league leader by 17.
VADEBONCOUER THE BALL MAGNET
Junior catcher Allie VadeBoncouer has drawn 21 free bases on hit-by-pitches this season. She is tied for sixth in the nation in HBPs through the NCAA’s most recent stats report. VadeBoncouer led the nation last season with 28 hit-by-pitches. She has been hit by 53 total pitches in her career.
