CARBONDALE, Ill. - Kelsey Gonzalez was named the female Student-Athlete of the Week by the Missouri Valley Conference, Commissioner Doug Elgin announced on Wednesday. Gonzalez and male honoree Kevin Kaczmarski of Evansville were honored for their performances during the period of April 21-27.

Kelsey Gonzalez slugged .933 on a huge week in which the Salukis took two of three games from league-leader Wichita State on the road. The sophomore hit two doubles and two home runs on her way to six RBIs and 14 total bases. She also walked three times for an even .500 batting average and struck out just once in 18 plate appearances. She also scored seven runs. She posted a 3-for-3 day with three RBIs and four runs scored in SIU's 10-3 win to sweep the Shockers in Saturday's doubleheader, and she also had a 2-for-2, three RBIs, and two runs scored game in a run-rule win over UT-Martin on Thursday. Her numbers against Wichita were even better than her weekly numbers; Gonzalez hit .444 with a 1.000 slugging percentage and .545 on-base percentage in the three-game series. Gonzalez has a cumulative GPA of 4.0 in marketing.

The MVC-leading Purple Aces have relied on Kevin Kaczmarski as the spark plug in their lineup. The junior helped Evansville continue its success with a sweep of Bradley over the weekend. In the series, Kaczmarski hit .500 as he went 5-for-10 from the plate with a triple, 4 RBIs, two walks and did not strike out. He leads the Aces in doubles (16), triples (4), home runs (4), RBIs (43), slugging (.536) and total bases (89). One of the top offensive weapons in the Valley, Kaczmarski leads the league in RBIs and is tied for the lead in doubles while tying for second in triples.

Gonzalez and the Salukis host Indiana State in the final weekend of the regular season this weekend at Charlotte West Stadium in Carbondale. The Salukis and Sycamores will start a doubleheader on Saturday at noon and play a series finale on Sunday at noon. Saturday will be Senior Day for SIU's five seniors, and free barbecue will be available outside the left-field fence.
